About us

Where it Began

We’ve noticed that for far too long spaces that are LGBTQ+ didn’t provide enough space for Asian voices. In Asian spaces, we’ve felt ourselves shrink away and hide our queer side. There’s this raging battle inside of us in which one side wants to speak out and be flamboyant, and the other one is scared to rock the boat. People sometimes forget that Asians can be queer — as if they’re shocked that you and I exist. While we may not come from the same backgrounds, we share similar frustrations and joys. Let us show the world together what the full spectrum of queer Asian experiences looks, feels, and sounds like. And who is better suited to amplify our voices than other people are just like us?

juxtapose magazine is the place where people who “aren’t supposed to be here” exist. We exist because you do. We exist because we understand that being Asian and LGBTQ is not mutually exclusive. This is not a niche. The distinct experiences and adventures are ours to share. Our experiences are not limited.

Language. Background. Invalidation. Affirmation. Microaggression. Celebration. Stereotype. Truth. Conformity. Individuality. Trauma. Joy.

From the family dinner table to Friendsgiving with your chosen family, we are here to bear witness to the spectrum of it all. Here, you don’t have to “bring your full self,” just bring as much of yourself as you want to process today. We hope you enjoy your stay.

We exist because you do.
